INGREDIENTS
1 big bunch Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan), chopped
1 tablespoon oil
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon channa dal
1 teaspoon urad dal
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
3-4 dried red chilies broken into pieces
1 small onion, finely chopped
Salt to taste
1/2 cup grated coconut
1/4 cup toated & crushed peanuts ( optional )
Wash the Chinese broccoli thoroughly.Trim the bottom stems and chop the stems and leaves separately — since stems take a little longer to cook.
If the stems are thick, slice them lengthwise.
Heat oil in a kadai.
Add:
Urad dal, chana dhal, cumin seeds & mustard seeds — let them splutter
and fry until the dhals are golden brown.
Break the red chilies and add it to the pan.
This tempering gives that authentic poriyal aroma!
Add chopped onions and sauté until soft and slightly translucent.
.
First add the chopped stems.Cook for 3-4 minutes.
Then add the leaves and mix well.
Cover, and cook on low for about 5 minutes — until tender but still vibrant green.
Once cooked, add freshly grated coconut.
Mix gently and cook for another minute.
Turn off the heat — and your Chinese Broccoli Poriyal is ready!
This tastes amazing with:
Steamed rice
Sambar
Rasam
Or even curd rice
It’s a healthy twist on a traditional South Indian side dish!
