Mercedes is scrambling after the FIA exposed the tyre trick that gave George Russell three times better degradation than any rival at the Austrian Grand Prix. The investigation into Russell's dominant Red Bull Ring victory has revealed how the W17 achieved impossible tyre performance in extreme heat.

While Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari and Max Verstappen's Red Bull suffered severe degradation Russell's Mercedes barely wore its tyres at all.
