It's been 6 months since Kristina Garcia received her Bachelors degree from UTPA. The 23-year old double major education and sociology hasn't had much luck landing a job.
She was working in sales over the summer, but had a baby and wasn't allowed to take much maternity leave. So now she's applying day and night for whatever position is available.
The new mom, struggling to stay optimistic about her situation, attended the recnent job fair in Hidalgo and found much more than she had anticipated.
It was there that Kristina met another man also looking for work. The 60 year old man had an entire family depending on him. He told Kristina he had no computer skills, so his options were limited
Kristina made her way around the employers booths. Many directing her to apply online. She went home still unemployed, but with an entirely new lease on life.
Kristina's conerns switched from herself to others like Mr. Casas, who were never taught the skills necessary in today's workplace to land a job, much less keep one.
With her parents glad to continue supporting her, Kristina is placing her efforts into helping chang someone else's life by offering free computer assistance.
It might not be the career opportunity Kristina has been wishing for, or bring her any compensation, but it's a way for her to use her knowledge and skills to better her community. Who knows, maybe her community will support her when it's her time to shine.
