Young Peoples Records, founded in 1946, was the brainchild of pianist and Juilliard alumnus Horace Grenell (1908-1981). YPR was conceived initially as a mail-order club, and one of the first record companies to use vinylite exclusively for its products (however, they called it "Permadisc"). Grenell later founded a rival children's label, Children's Record Guild (which ultimately merged with YPR), as well as classical LP labels like the American Recording Society, Music Treasures of the World (another mail-order operation), and, in the 60s, Desto.
"Said the Piano to the Harpsichord" was issued in 1948. The narration is by David Allen, the piano and harpsichord "voices" are by Gilbert Mack. The uncredited harpsichordist is Sylvia Marlowe; the pianist is unknown. Music featured includes Dandrieu's "La Gemissante," Chopin's Polonaise in A-Flat and Rameau's Tambourin, and, as a finale, an arrangement by Douglas Moore (who also wrote the script) of "The Old Gray Mare" for piano and harpsichord duet.
