I speak today not only as an Irish MEP, but also as an American citizen. I was born in the United States. I lived and worked there for many years. I still have close family there, and this week for the first time in my life, I found myself worrying about their safety.
The case of Mr Seamus Culleton reminds us that the days of “No Irish Need Apply” are no longer a relic of the past. The signs found in the shop windows and offices of England in the 1980’s are now returning to the United States of the 21st century.
The US of today is not a land of opportunity for people like me and many others in this room.
Ahead of his annual St Patrick’s Day visit, I am calling on our Taoiseach Michael Martin to raise the case of Mr Culleton directly with President Trump in the Oval Office.
