Northern Mesopotamia is home to a number of Non-Arab peoples, but perhaps the two most emblematic are the Assyrians, the Christian ethnoreligious group that claims to originate with the Assyrian Empire, and the Kurds, a mostly-Sunni ethnic group that claims to originate with the Medes. This presentation will follow the last two weeks' discussions Ancient and Medieval Assyria and Kurdistan, discussing how these peoples fit into the Ottoman systems of governance.
The Ottomans controlled the Levant from 1517 and Mesopotamia from 1532, losing both in 1917, but this term "control" should be understood to be a loose alliance with local potentates, tax-farmers (multazems), tribal coalitions, and former slave-soldiers (mamluks). This presentation will seek to discuss the four hundred years of internecine fighting and regime shifting under the Ottoman aegis in the Levant and Mesopotamia, emphasizing influential local leaders like Bashir Shihab II, Bader Khan Beg, and Dawud Pasha.
