Language or learning differences? Considering linguistic diversity in education
Multilingualism reflects an interactional experience between an individual and her environment through multiple languages. In North America, multilingual children who struggle with learning often lead educators or clinicians to consider whether English services or special education services (or both!) are the best support for learning. In this presentation, I will present a line of my research program exploring multilingualism and special education in US and Canada. Drawing from research in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and education, I take a transdisciplinary approach to explore the intersection of multilingual development, learning abilities and disabilities. Though there is no definitive answer that works for all developmental, social, and educational contexts, a transdisciplinary approach integrating ecologically grounded questions and laboratory-based research are necessary to understand the pressing educational challenges that children and educators face.
