Ever since farmers and police clashed on the streets of Delhi on Republic Day, all eyes have been on the future of the Farmers' Delhi Chalo movement. On January 28th, however, the movement got an unexpected new direction. There was news of heavy police forced deployed at the Ghazipur border in order to have farmers' vacate the site of the protests. However, BKU Leader Rakesh Tikait, vehemently opposed the idea, and in an emotional appeal decided to sit on a fast unto death. Soon after, a call was made by Naresh Tikait for a Mahapanchayat, and for farmers to come gather together to support the movement. Did Rakesh Tikait's tears galvanise a movement that was being put under the scanner? Is the farmers movement now become increasingly more political?
