"The Israeli occupation government's announcement of its alleged recognition of the northwestern region of Somalia, the so-called Somaliland, is an act of aggression and provocation, utterly unacceptable. It constitutes a blatant and unprecedented violation of international law, UN resolutions, the charters of the League of Arab States and the African Union, and represents a flagrant challenge to the will of the international community and a disregard for the international order based on respect for the sovereignty of states."

"We affirm here that Somalia will not be a party to any attempt to displace our Palestinian brothers from their land, and we will work during our membership in the Security Council in 2025 and 2026, and during our rotating presidency of the Council in January 2026, to thwart these plans and stand against blatant Israeli ambitions."

STORYLINE:
Somali Ambassador Ali Orari said Israel’s recognition of the Somaliland was an act of aggression and constitutes a “blatant and unprecedented violation of international law” in an Arab League emergency meeting in Cairo on Sunday,

The emergency meeting, which was called on by Somalia, was held a day after Israel announced that it would recognize Somaliland.

Orari in his address alleged that the recognition was part of a broader Israeli plan aimed at displacing Palestinians.

He said Somalia would not be a part of “any effort to displace our Palestinian brothers from their land.”

Orari added that Somalia would use its rotating presidency of the UN Security Council from Janueary 2026 to "thwart these plans and stand against blatant Israeli ambitions."
