I drove eight hours back home on Thanksgiving, only to find out my family had let my nephew’s girlfriend take my seat. When I asked where I could sit, my mother told me to grab a stool from the kitchen.

I think it started when I was seven during one of her infamous Thanksgiving meltdowns. My older brother Shawn had knocked over the gravy boat while chasing our cousin around the table, and mom was screaming so loud the dog hid in the laundry room. I stood on a chair, tapped a spoon on a glass, and said, "Maybe we should all go around and say what we're thankful for." Everyone laughed...
