A common tactic for Ahlul-Bidah to justify their deviations is to pin blame on the companions and hide behind their actions. They do this using deceptions and doubts to hide the truth and in reality the companions are free from their innovations. This doubt spread by the Khawarij is no different, as the Shaykh Abu Iyaad حفظه الله goes through in detail.
