In statistics, the mode is the value that appears most frequently in a dataset. It is one of the three primary measures of central tendency, alongside the mean (average) and median (middle value).
Unlike the mean and median, which are strictly numerical, the mode can be used for both numerical and categorical data (e.g., "blue" is the mode of a favorite color survey).
1. Types of Mode
A dataset can have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode at all.
Unimodal: The dataset has only one value that occurs most frequently.
Example: \{1, 3, 3, 7, 9\} \rightarrow Mode is 3.
Bimodal: The dataset has two values that tie for the highest frequency.
Example: \{2, 4, 4, 6, 8, 8, 9\} \rightarrow Modes are 4 and 8.
Multimodal: The dataset has three or more values that tie for the highest frequency.
No Mode: No value repeats in the dataset.
Example: \{1, 2, 3, 4, 5\} \rightarrow No mode.
