The very building that gave the city its name.
The Romans were first to come North of the River Tyne building a bridge at its narrowest point and a settlement called Pons Aelius after the Emperor Hadrian. Once they left, nothing much happened until 1080 when a motte and bailey castle was built on the current site to keep the locals in check. But with boarder troubles, a stronger stone building was needed and so between 1172 and 1177 a more fortified structure was built.
Today, only the Keep and Black Gate remain with some of the south wall but it's the best place to view the modern city.
