Hans Zimmer's DROP ZONE emerges out of the heavy metal guitar of its main title (bypassing the grunt-rap of 'Hyphopera') into a cohesive and very well integrated maelstrom of rapid rhythms. A fast-snapped synth riff drives the score and lends an undercoat of purposeful movement to the percussion and guitar figures that circulate above it. The music is vigorous and complex in its fast rhythms, maintaining an exciting forward motion to the agile music. Zimmer integrates electric guitar into the score quite nicely, as in the conclusion of 'Hi Jack' where it emerges stridently from a thick tempo of percussion and synth - perhaps a nod to a Michael Kamen / Eric Clapton LETHAL WEAPON temp track?
One cue, 'Flashback & Fries' is actually composed by Nick Glennie-Smith, though it mixes nicely with the Zimmer material. The aptly titled 'Too Many Notes - Not Enough Rests' is a ten-and-a-half minute cue of furious activity, which to his credit Zimmer keeps well organized, maintaining a dramatic sensibility without letting it fall into mindless dissonance. This and the 8minute 'After the Dub' are the score's standouts. Zimmer maintains a fir control over his furious orchestrations and the whole congeals very nicely together into a likeably energetic composition.
