The Hall of Supreme Harmony, commonly known as the "Golden Throne Hall", is the iconic building of the Forbidden City. Situated at a prominent position on the north-south central axis of the Forbidden City, it was first completed in the 18th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1420) and named the Hall of Heavenly Mandate (Fengtian Dian). It was renamed the Hall of Imperial Supremacy (Huangji Dian) in the 41st year of the Jiajing reign (1562) and assumed its current name in the 2nd year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1645). Having been repeatedly burned down and reconstructed after its completion, the hall we see today retains the form of its reconstruction in the 34th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1695).
With 11 bays in width and 5 bays in depth, the Hall of Supreme Harmony covers a construction area of 2,377.00 square meters, stands 26.92 meters high, and reaches a total height of 35.05 meters including the platform, making it the largest hall in the Forbidden City. It features a double-eave gabled and hip roof (wudian ding). At both ends of the roof ridge are installed large roof ornaments (da wen) that are 3.40 meters high and weigh approximately 4,300 kilograms. Ten mythical beasts are placed at the corners of the eaves, the largest number among existing ancient buildings.
The Hall of Supreme Harmony is adorned with extremely luxurious decorations. Dense brackets (dougong) are installed under the eaves, and dragon and phoenix colored paintings (hexi caihua) decorate the beams and brackets inside and out. The upper parts of the doors and windows are inlaid with rhombus lattice patterns, while the lower parts are carved with reliefs of cloud and dragon motifs. Gilded copper plates engraved with dragon patterns are installed at the joints. The floor of the hall is paved with golden bricks (jinzhuan), and a throne is placed in the central bay. On both sides of the throne stand 6 giant pillars, each 1.00 meter in diameter, decorated with gilded dragon patterns outlined in raised powder.
The interior of the Hall of Supreme Harmony (commonly known as the "Golden Throne Hall") represents the pinnacle of ancient Chinese palace architecture. It integrates rare materials, exquisite craftsmanship, and a symbolic system, with every detail embodying the supremacy of imperial power.
