Harlan Ellison was a brilliant writer. He was kind and generous, hard working, a complete human being. He was also a dick. Mercurial, hot tempered, volatile, lazy, an inveterate procrastinator, a but if a serial fibber, and superhumanly vindictive. He also didn't let the truth get in the way of telling a good story, especially if it made him look good and people he didn't like look bad. Which brings us to The Starlost. He told his story a lot, but there are holes and contradictions in his story, and his timeline doesn't work. There was a lot of things went wrong with that show, and Harlan Ellison was one of them. He simply wasn't suited to the role cast for him as Creator and Story Editor, he procrastinated and ignored his obligations, he neither worked with nor even acknowledged the limitations of production. By the time he threw his tantrum and walked off on the eve of production, he'd left an unfilmable pilot and a backlog of no scripts by anyone.
