Gnawa is type of spiritual music which originates in Africa and is widely used and appreciated throughout Morocco. It has greatly influenced my life, my spiritual journey, and my own compositions. This is an adaptation from a poem by the famous Moroccan Sufi poet Sidi Qdor El ‘Alami.
*Makkawi technically means “Meccan” or someone from Mecca; here it is referring to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
**”It” is referring to the phrase “la ilaha ila Allah,” and the idea of living by this.
***RHiq ila Makhtoum is a famous book about spirituality.
