If blousy, flowery cottage gardens make you think of your grandma, you’re not alone. While minimalist stylings and outdoor rooms are in fashion, floriferous, fun and full-of-colour cottage gardens are making a comeback. In line with the adage that “everything old is new again”, these styles of gardens prove what our Nannas knew all along – these plants are gorgeous, and a lot hardier than they look!

One thing that all these plants have in common is how easy they are to propagate by division.

Tips for successful propagation by division:
• When dividing perennial plants look for good young shoots because these will grow to produce really great new plants next year.
• Some perennials grow so vigorously and densely that the centre of the plant can die out. When you lift a plant, if you find dead areas, simply remove them or discard that part and use the more vigorous edge for propagation. Try to get a nice lot of root with each clump.
• If a clump is difficult to divide, put a couple of forks in the middle and just pull them apart.
• Dividing perennials gives them new vigour and means being able to generate more plants.
