Six people have been sentenced to up to six months in prison for illegally trading tridacna clams, an endangered bivalve mollusk that is currently on the country’s protected species list.
Pudong police received a tip-off last October, saying a Mr. Xu was selling tridacna clams in a Wechat group. After the investigation, police arrested Xu and 5 others. Xu admitted that he purchased over 30 clams from Hainan Province, a major source of these clams in China, between 2013 and 2019, and then sold them to other buyers.
Xu was fined 5,000 and will spend the next 6 months in jail. The 5 others who were arrested were each fined 1,000 and given 3 months of jail time and three months of probation.
