The Optical Fleximeter Misura® FLEX can be used to perform bending analyses of materials without any application of loads. For example, it is able to study the bending caused by:
differences in thermal expansion between a body and a glaze,
differences in sintering behaviour between glaze, engobe and body
pyroplastic deformation that occurs in a body. Above the glass transition temperature, the glassy phase present into a body enters into a super cooled liquid state, according to which the viscosity rapidly decreases as the temperature increases. In this way, the material can lose its consistency and deform because of pyroplasticity.
The instrument can be also used to measure the flexion of a green ceramic body due to the absorption of water. In this case, the kiln can be left open and the water is applied directly on the sample.
