Seven suspects in custody connected with cockfighting ring, surviving roosters recovered

Описание: While much of the nation was focused on the Super Bowl, law enforcement in San Antonio was busy dismantling a cockfighting operation.

Acting on a tip from a non-governmental organization specializing in animal cruelty cases, the sheriff's office, with assistance from the San Antonio Police Department's Eagle unit, executed a search warrant on the property earlier today.

Authorities observed several vehicles leaving the scene, one of which was stopped and found to be loaded with roosters.

A total of seven individuals are now in custody, including the homeowner suspected of orchestrating the illegal activity. Charges could range from engaging in organized criminal activity to cockfighting and animal cruelty.

Upon entering the property, officers discovered a 16-by-16-foot fighting ring stained with blood, believed to be from the roosters. Several dead and dying roosters were found, and some suspects had blood on them, likely from the animals. Bexar County Animal Control was on-site to take custody of the surviving animals, including one severely injured rooster that had been discarded.

The operation appears to have been a gathering point for individuals from various locations to compete against each other, with participants likely returning to their properties with surviving roosters.
