She began the day visiting pandas at the Chengdu Panda Base where Chinese veterinarians are gathering research on the lives of giant pandas.
Several of these pandas were born outside China and returned to Chengdu after a period of maturing.
Following her visit to the panda base, Mrs. Obama, her daughters and Mrs. Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, had lunch in a Tibetan restaurant.
Mrs. Obama entered the Zangxiang restaurant spinning eleven Tibetan prayer wheels that lined the entrance.
Obama, her mother and two daughters were greeted by a group of students who presented the four with traditional Tibetan ceremonial long white scarfs.
Her staff said the restaurant choice Wednesday in Chengdu city in southwest Sichuan province was in accordance with the American first lady's interest in the rights of minorities in China.

The rights of Tibetans is a touchy issue between the Chinese and US governments.
President Barack Obama met with the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama last month over the objections of Beijing, who label him as a separatist.
