Fortepiano vs modern piano: Why does Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven sound so different on a fortepiano compared with a modern concert grand — and why do these differences matter today?
This video compares a Classical-era Viennese fortepiano with a piano, breaking down the mechanical and acoustic differences, and their impact on articulation, balance, and pedaling at the modern piano. Especially useful for pianists and piano teachers/professors.
We compare three key areas:
1). Sound creation: Hammers and sound decay differences and how they impact articulation
2). Sound qualities: Alberti bass and pedaling, including a Moonlight sonata excerpt
3). Tuning: Unequal temperament (Kirnberger III) vs equal temperament, and why key choice mattered in the Classical era
Recorded examples include Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Pathétique’ Sonatas, plus Mozart and Haydn.
Note: There was a severe thunderstorm on filming day, so you may hear rain and related noises.
