In an interview with PBS NewsHour’s Amna Nawaz at FORTUNE's Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, D.C., former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she does not regret “enforcing the law” when the Trump administration implemented its “zero tolerance” policy that led to migrant children being separated from their families. Thousands of children were separated in 2018 even though experts have warned that the practice can cause long-term trauma. “What I regret is that that information flow and coordination to quickly reunite the families was clearly not in place,” Nielsen said when asked whether she regretted signing a memorandum that allowed for the child separations.
