[Chinese athlete, Qiu Qiyuan, 17 years old. Van Leeuwen… Full twisting double tuck dismount! And stuck! She has performed her hardest set today!]
QQY: Once I stuck the dismount, I stood there for a few seconds, taking it all in. I felt I was about to burst into tears. Hello everyone, I am Qiu Qiyuan, a gymnast. Each time I stand onto the medal podium, seeing the Chinese flag being lifted and hearing the national anthem being played, I always feel honored and blessed.
I think I am a very lucky person to have found such a suitable path for me at such a young name. This is a big goal in life for everyone. I started at the age of 4 because I especially liked jumping around on trampoline. Around 3 months later, my first coach brought me to the gymnasium to train. At the time, it was because I was short, but was able to jump very high. I also had a great ability to imitate skills others were doing.
My best events are the uneven bars and balance beam. In the gymnastics world, everyone says that balance beam is the easiest to train, but the hardest to compete in. It is only 10 centimeters wide. There are many opportunities to show off artistic abilities on this event. We call it a ring, where the back leg bends upward and our head is released backward, just like this. Balance beam is difficult for taller gymnasts because it is easy to wobble around, and even now, I feel my movements not being as precise as when I was younger.
LT: Good good! That one was very good. Do you feel it? You need to go up more. This is a skill that requires open shoulders, so don’t be afraid to go for it.
QQY: The uneven bars completely rely on your arms. There is no time to stop, and the routine will always go on. At the Olympics, even when I hit my feet on the bar, I told myself, no matter what, I am staying on these bars.
In gymnastics, all our events are based on consistency and stability. If you aren’t stable enough, it is easy to fall off the apparatus, which incurs a 1 point deduction. In the team final at the Olympics, when I hit my feet on the bars but continued on, the deduction was only 0.5 to 0.8. Even though it’s still a lot, I need to save every single tenth I can.
Is it tough? What sport isn’t tough? All athletes start from a young age and keep refining and refining day after day. I guess this is our superpower.
Half a month before leaving for the Paris Olympics, I flew off the bars and landed on my elbow. During that time, I couldn’t even move around my wrist or bear pressure. I felt my mental state collapsing, worrying that I would be swapped out of the Olympics because of this injury. But I persevered, slowing gaining back strength every day, even if it was only 10% more. I just kept pushing.
QQY’s Mom: You never told us about [this injury]. Not even your coaches told us.
QQY: It’s cause I told the coach not to tell you.
QQY’s Mom: I was the one who gave birth to you. Our souls are connected. I almost couldn’t bear it [when I heard the news], I went in the bathroom to cry. Everybody told me that it was a pity you got silver, such a small difference. But I can only be proud of your silver medal. Don’t ever be sad over not winning a gold medal. After all, what I want is a healthy daughter that can be with me, not any gold medal. I hope you can always be healthy.
QQY: There’s a saying. Stepping off the medal podium is like starting over from zero. The next Olympic quad is coming soon. Even though I’ve won a few accolades already, I need to forget about everything and have a fresh start.
