She has previously written for The Oregonian and ProPublica, where she covered civil rights and documented redlining and housing discrimination. Hannah-Jones is the creator of the NYT's 1619 Project, a collection of essays, poems, short fiction, and photo essays that re-examines the roots and legacy of slavery, from America’s founding to present day.
