What does it mean for Alberta to be “innovative” in politics, and what happens when those experiments succeed, fail, or harden into habit?
Alberta’s Past: A New Lens is a seven-part documentary series that looks beyond the “great men” version of history and into the machinery underneath: institutions, crises, incentives, and the stories we keep telling about ourselves.
In Episode Four, we stay with the theme of innovation but turn to Alberta’s formal politics: parties, premiers, movements, and the institutions they built.
You’ll hear from Frits Pannekoek, historian David Elliott, and former ministers David King and Fred Bradley as they trace the province’s political experiments across the long arc: the Social Gospel and United Farmers currents, William Aberhart and Social Credit’s “wild” innovations (and their risks), and Peter Lougheed’s deliberate political culture, including the ways process and institutional design can have unintended consequences over time.
A production of Calgary Civic Trust in association with The Narrative Lens.
Funded in part by the Government of Alberta and Athabasca University.
