Sibsey – “Sigebald’s Island”

This week in East Lindsey, we’ve come to one of the furthest flung reaches of the district, where it touches the Borough of Boston. We’re in a place called Sibsey, situated at the junction between the A16 and B1184 roads, 4 miles north of Boston. Despite being on that junction, Sibsey does not lie on a crossroads. The old main road – the B1184 – ran from East to West, and when the A16 came along, Sibsey’s layout changed dramatically, giving the village a North to South alignment instead. Everything was clustered together in a lopsided square, unceremoniously ripped into two pieces by the brand new road.

One effect of that is now, traffic does not have to wind its way through the village – it blasts straight through – and that’s a shame. Sibsey is well worth exploring. This was the birthplace of one of the most famous comedy actors the country has ever had – Arthur Towle, who was better known by his stage name, and even better as his drag act alter ego, Old Mother Riley. Sibsey was also the birthplace of the post impressionist painter, Frank Bramley, and also hosted other famous names like Annie Beasant

Landmarks wise you’d do well to see past the awesome Sibsey Trader Mill. With six sails and six storeys, the Trader Mill is one of the tallest working windmills in the world. There’s lots more here too.
