"Dixie" (1859)
Written by Daniel Decatur Emmett (1815-1904)
Performed by the Americus Brass Band / On-Screen appearance by Saxton's Cornet Band
"Dixie" was written by an Ohioan in New York as a minstrel tune and was enjoyed by both the North and South during the American Civil War. The version performed in 'Gettysburg' comes from Squire's Cornet Band Olio No. 1 which was published in 1871, though it is likely that the arrangements found in this collection are from much earlier. The music was recorded by the Americus Brass Band of Long Beach, California, but the visual portrayal was done by Saxton's Cornet Band of Lexington, Kentucky. For these scenes, it is possible that the brass band being depicted is that of the 26th North Carolina Regiment Band, one of the handfuls of bands present during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
