As the keiki students of Roy Sakuma Ukulele Studios took the Kapiolani Park Bandstand stage to perform “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” it stirred powerful memories of 1994, when Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole graced the same stage of the 24th Annual Ukulele Festival Hawaii — surrounded by keiki students playing his now-iconic version of the song. Over 30 years later, the spirit of that performance lives on as history repeated itself through every strum. The lasting impact of Iz’s music continues to touch generations past and present.
