A senior commander from Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency was the target of a pre-dawn ambush near the Bukit Kayu Hitam crossing on Wednesday morning, in an incident that has alarmed law enforcement but that top officials say will not destabilise national security.
At about 5:40am Malaysian Time, Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasaruddin Mohd Nasir, commander of the Bukit Kayu Hitam unit, was driving his Proton X70 towards Masjid Al Muhajirin to perform his Subuh prayers when two men on a motorcycle approached his vehicle and fired at it.
Police say the assailants, dressed in black and wearing full-face helmets, fired two shots at the car as it travelled along the slip road roughly one kilometre from the Malaysia–Thailand border, hitting the rear right door and front passenger door.
Despite the shots, SAC Nasaruddin was unhurt in the attack. Alarmed but unharmed, he briefly pursued the suspects for about 1 km before they evaded capture by fleeing into a nearby industrial area.
After the pursuit, the commander drove to the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex police station in Bukit Kayu Hitam to file a report and seek assistance.
Kedah police chief Comm Datuk Adzli Abu Shah described the event as serious and said the case is being investigated under the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 for discharging a firearm with intent to cause death or injury.
Authorities have also indicated that the weapon used may have been a semi-automatic firearm, noting shattered bullet fragments recovered from the scene during preliminary investigation.
Police are continuing an active search for the two gunmen. They have launched Operation Tutup, which involves tracking the suspects around border checkpoints and entry points, including Durian Burung.
Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests have been confirmed.
Investigators are exploring possible criminal syndicate links to the attack, and have not ruled out a motive related to tensions with cross-border smuggling networks. Officials have noted recent enforcement successes in the Bukit Kayu Hitam area, including significant seizures of contraband rice and pork and the detention of smugglers and undocumented migrants; such actions may have angered syndicates and prompted retaliation.
In response to the incident, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the government is taking the shooting “seriously,” but emphasised that security at all national entry points remains under control and that additional measures have been deployed to safeguard personnel and the public.
“We are grateful that the commander is safe,” the minister said, urging the public not to speculate and to allow the Royal Malaysia Police to conduct a thorough and professional investigation.
The minister also stressed that firm action will be taken against those involved and that the government will not compromise on threats to national security.
The Bukit Kayu Hitam crossing is one of Malaysia’s busiest overland borders with Thailand. It is a key route for trade and travel between the two countries, making the security of the area a priority for enforcement agencies.
As of the latest updates, no further details on the suspects’ identities or motives have been released. The investigation continues, with heightened vigilance by Malaysian authorities to prevent any escalation or repeat of such an attack.
