Based on the novel by Nigel Balchin, "The Small Back Room" (also known as "Hour of Glory") is a BBC Radio "Saturday-Night Theatre" production. The psychological thriller, which was broadcast in 1969, follows Sammy Rice, a brilliant but troubled weapons scientist during WWII.

Sammy is a "back-room boy," a civilian scientist working for a government department tasked with evaluating new weapons. He is embittered by the bureaucracy and departmental politics that constantly frustrate his team's work. Further adding to his torment, Sammy suffers from a prosthetic foot that causes him constant pain, which he often medicates with alcohol, leading to a self-destructive cycle.

The central plot of the story unfolds when Sammy is called upon to use his expertise to investigate a new and deadly German booby-trap bomb being dropped across Britain. The devices are disguised and have already claimed civilian lives. As Sammy works to uncover the secret of the bomb, he must also battle his inner demons, his alcoholism, and his self-doubt. The play culminates in a tense, high-stakes scene where Sammy confronts one of the bombs on a beach, a moment that will test his nerve and potentially restore his self-esteem.
