STORYLINE
Residents on Serbia's Cer mountain said on Wednesday that it seemed highly improbable that the Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect General Ratko Mladic has been hiding in the area.
Chief U.N. war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte said that although Mladic was "within reach" of Serbian authorities, he "remains at large."
Del Ponte's comments came amid conflicting reports that led to confusion over Mladic's fate.
The private Beta news agency, without citing sources, said Tuesday that Mladic had been found on Cer Mountain, some 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Belgrade on the border with Bosnia.
"I don't think he's hiding here. Even if he was, he could have left a thousand times after the news emerged," said a resident.
"There's no place where he could hide here. Not even a boar could hide in the woods. It cannot stay alive, let alone a person," said another.
Del Ponte said there was no indication at all that negotiations about Mladic's surrender were being conducted.
There have been numerous incorrect reports in the past that Mladic was captured.
