The B-17 That Landed With Half Its Tail Missing
High above the battlefields of North Africa in 1943, one aircraft survived a disaster that should have torn it apart in mid-air. During a brutal mission over enemy territory, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress suffered a catastrophic collision with a Messerschmitt Bf 109. The impact ripped open the rear fuselage and nearly destroyed the bomber’s entire tail section.
From nearby aircraft in the formation, the damaged bomber looked doomed. Its stabilizer was shattered, the tail gunner’s compartment was almost gone, and pieces of the aircraft were barely holding together in the violent slipstream.
Yet somehow, the bomber did not fall.
Instead, the crippled aircraft continued flying—struggling through hundreds of miles of sky while its crew fought to keep control. Against all odds, the aircraft managed to return to base and land safely.
The aircraft would later become known as the legendary B-17 All American, one of the most famous survival stories in aviation history.
This incredible moment highlights the remarkable durability of the Flying Fortress and the courage of the crews who flew these dangerous missions during World War II.
In this video, we explore the dramatic events of that mission, the engineering strength behind the B-17, and why stories like this helped build the aircraft’s legendary reputation in the skies of WWII.
