(28 Mar 2017) The UN human rights office is calling on the international coalition conducting air strikes on the northern Iraqi city of Mosul to work to "minimise the impact" on civilians.
Rights office spokesperson Rupert Colville says Islamic State militants were brazenly employing human shields. He urged the coalition forces to "avoid this trap" set by the radical group.
He told reporters on Tuesday that the rights office has tallied the deaths of at least 307 people between 17 February and 22 March, including at least 61 from a single 17 March airstrike incident on a house in al-Jadida neighbourhood.
Colville pointed to an "emerging clarity" about IS' use of human shields from among the tens of thousands of people who have fled western Mosul since the government-led offensive there began on 17 February.
