For those of you waiting for me to describe the Fizzy Bomb or the Booyah Bomb in more detail, you'll have to wait a little longer. I've shuffled the upcoming weapons around to get there sooner though. For now, here's the Kensa Splat Roller.
I've described the ins and outs of Rollers for a while now, so there isn't more I can say about the basic, balanced Splat Roller you get not long after you start playing online, because that's how this one works. You know the drill: Short range and vulnerable to Chargers, but not bad at inking and very good at splatting via flanking. Also a good choice for beginners due to not needing to aim much to use it well.
The reason you'd pick the Kensa over the Krak-On or the basic Splat Roller, of course, is the sub-weapon and special weapon. The Kensa Splat Roller has Splat Bombs with the Bubble Blower. The other Splat Rollers have sets designed for greater mobility but with short-range special weapons (Curling Bombs and Splashdown for the vanilla Splat Roller, Squid Beakons and Baller for the Krak-On Splat Roller), whereas the Kensa Splat Roller trades those mobility options for a slightly longer attack range and higher defense through the Splat Bombs and Bubble Blower. A Roller's worst enemy is an opponent with a longer range who has spotted the Roller user; they're smart enough to keep away from the Roller's range while attacking back. Only the Kensa Splat Roller, among these three, provides options to deal with such people: The Splat Bombs create direct threats and makes them move somewhere less favorable, and the Bubble Blowers create barriers preventing them from attacking you until you can get close enough to them to attack them directly. In particular, these are ways to fight Chargers and close the gap, as Chargers depend on a fortified position (where your Splat Bombs come in) and a clear line of sight with nothing to absorb damage along the way (the Bubble Blowers can help here). The result is that the Kensa Splat Roller is the only Roller in the game able to consistently defeat a Charger head-on. Due to it lacking Curling Bombs or Squid Beakons, though, if you want to flank someone to splat them, you'll have a harder time because you have to do it entirely through the main weapon.
The main argument for the Kensa Splat Roller in Ranked is its versatility. You will be a frequent target regardless of the mode, as it requires you to get very close to whatever the objective may be, making it essential to get rid of opponents before they know you're there. However, if you get to where you need to be before your opponents do, the Kensa Splat Roller is unparalleled among Rollers in ways to keep opponents from getting close. To that end, the Kensa Splat Roller is not as effective in Clam Blitz as the others, as you won't always be guarding something, but as you can see in this video, it's no slouch there either.
Like allof the Kensa weapons, this one is decorated in a black-and-white scheme with a red highlight in the form of a clothespin. This one is located on one of the arms connecting the handle to the drum.
Match #1
Sturgeon Shipyard
Clam Blitz
Kensa Splat Roller
Color Scheme: Alien Slime
Song: "Don't Slip" by Wet Floor
Octolings: 3
Regrettably, half of my team was laser-focused on getting the Power Clam to the basket no matter what, which means our basket is left open for much of this match. Even in the A-Rank, you'll constantly find people who don't understand that one goal retracts when the other one opens. By the way, the Halloween headgear has been released, available to anyone with access to the Nintendo Switch News, hence the devil horns and hockey masks on the other team.
Match #2
Skipper Pavilion
Clam Blitz
Kensa Splat Roller
Color Scheme: Roselia
Song: "Entropical" by SashiMori
Octolings: 2
THIS is the reason why I chose to play during this rotation, to show how Clam Blitz works in Skipper Pavilion and the first time we get to see Clam Blitz on a stage with mirror symmetry: Indeed, you're rarely far from the opposing basket, and that seems to be something that caught the enemy team by surprise when I snuck up across rather than down and up. There are clusters of clams at the furthest point though. And I promised a song from SashiMori in the next regular match video, so here it is! This is "Entropical."
Match #3
Piranha Pit
Turf War
Kensa Splat Roller
Color Scheme: Mouthwash
Song: "Kinetosis" by Diss-Pair
Octolings: 2
I chose this match because, out of sheer coincidence, there were 7 Roller users in this room, including myself. Then there's Bowser1556, using a Slosher. See how well I fare compared to other people using Rollers in this match.
Match #4
Musselforge Fitness
Turf War
Kensa Splat Roller
Color Scheme: Haribo Halloween
Song: "Riptide Rupture" by Ink Theory
Octolings: 4
There were two Chargers on the opposing side, making this a good demonstration of this weapon's anti-Charger traits.
