🎸 THE STORY:
March 1968, Manny's Music on 48th Street, Manhattan. Saturday afternoon free guitar clinic—a professional guitarist teaching basic techniques to anyone who walked in.
The instructor was Rick Matthews, a competent session guitarist who'd made a living playing on jingles and backing artists. He was teaching Travis picking to about 25 students.
In the back corner, almost hidden behind display cases, stood a young Black man with a large afro, purple velvet jacket, bell-bottom jeans. He'd wandered in 10 minutes earlier, browsing amplifiers, occasionally glancing at the lesson.
Nobody recognized him.
This was Jimi Hendrix, casually shopping for new gear on a rare afternoon off.
Matthews noticed the man in back wasn't paying attention. This annoyed him.
"Excuse me. You in the back. With the afro. You here for the lesson or just browsing?"
"Just browsing. Looking at the amps."
"Well, you're being kind of distracting back there. If you're going to stay, at least pay attention. Or better yet, since you seem so interested in the equipment instead of the technique, why don't you come up here and show us what you can do?"
It was said with condescension—the tone of someone who assumed this guy couldn't play.
Jimi hesitated. "That's okay, I don't want to interrupt—"
"No, I insist. You're interrupting anyway. Come on up. Let's see what the quiet guy in the corner can do."
The sarcasm was obvious. Students chuckled uncomfortably.
Jimi looked at the exit, considering leaving. But something about the dismissive tone made him reconsider.
"Alright."
Matthews held out the Gibson acoustic. "Show us a basic Travis picking pattern."
"I know what it is," Jimi said quietly. "You want to hear Travis picking?"
Jimi started playing, and within three seconds, everything changed.
He played Travis picking the way Merle Travis himself would have—complex, fluid, thumb and fingers moving independently with precision that made it look effortless. The bass walked while melody danced on top.
Students who'd been half-listening were now fully focused. Matthews's arms slowly uncrossed.
Then Jimi transitioned—blues fingerpicking, Mississippi Delta style, making the acoustic guitar percussive and melodic simultaneously.
Then classical arpeggios—rapid, precise, years of study visible.
A crowd was gathering from other parts of the store.
Someone whispered: "Is that...?"
"Holy shit. That's Jimi Hendrix."
Matthews's face went pale.
Jimi played for three minutes, then handed back the Gibson.
The room erupted in applause.
"Mr. Hendrix, I... I had no idea... I'm so sorry—"
"It's cool. You didn't know."
"Would you... show these folks a bit more?"
Jimi gave an impromptu 90-minute masterclass.
