This is a detail that came up in one of our projects in rural Idaho.
The clients are not pursuing Passive House certification, but want to implement the PH building science to improve the quality of their building.
The 28 ga exterior metal trim at the door was installed before the door, and it was supposed to be trimmed before the door went in.
That didn't happen, and the door got installed over the metal trim.
Without remediation, the continuous sheet of metal under the door frame would be a major thermal bridge, allowing a lot of heat to escapte to the outside.
With the higher heat losses, we can only expect lower surface temperatures on the interior surface of the door frame, and on the drywall next to it.
We modeled this detail as-built, and the result was clear: without thermal bridge mitigation, the door-to-wall connection would be subject to mold.
Luckily, the mitigation strategy in this case was simple enough, and did not require to uninstall the door.
Issues like this come up all the time on the construction site.
In our Passive Design/Build™ Boot Camp, when it comes to thermal bridging we teach how to tell the difference between a "mouse" and an "elephant".
This was definitely an "elephant".
