In today's PMP Exam blink, we will look at Project Lifecycles.

We'll answer:
1. What is a project lifecycle?
2. What are the types of lifecycles?
3. Examples of different lifecycles

In project management, the term "life cycle" refers to a series of phases that a project goes through It serves as the fundamental structure for managing the project The basis for choosing a lifecycle depends on the complexity factor of the project being undertaken.

Broadly, project lifecycles are of 3 types:

1. Plan-driven lifecycles: Plan-driven lifecycles are also called waterfall or traditional lifecycles
2. Change-driven lifecycles: Change-driven lifecycles contain iterative, incremental, or adaptive (agile) lifecycles
3. Hybrid lifecycles: A mix of predictive and adaptive lifecycles

Plan-driven lifecycles are used where the requirements and technical uncertainty in the project are low Or when the project carries a higher degree of risk such as risk to human life Or for projects that value security and stability more than the time spent doing the project

Plan-driven project example:
Constructing a building, a bridge, an airplane, or developing a large application in healthcare or the banking sectors

Change-driven projects are used in projects where time is of the essence and requirements emerge as the project goes along Change driven projects can be incremental, iterative, or adaptive and can have varying levels of planning for scope, schedule, and cost.


Incremental Lifecycles: These lifecycles provide project deliverables to customers in small increments consistently at fixed time intervals such as weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. The frequency of delivery is higher with incremental lifecycles.

Incremental Lifecycle example: Developing and delivering various sections or pages of a website at regular time intervals in the order of priority as defined by the end-user.

Iterative Lifeycles: Iterative lifecycles may not necessarily release deliverables regularly from time to time. Project requirements are modified, improved, or corrected frequently until a desirable solution is developed. Then, the fully formed solution is delivered to the customer all at once.

Iterative lifecycle example: A researcher might make
multiple reviews and modifications to a research paper improve the quality of the paper iteratively before finally publishing it in the public domain.


Adaptive lifecycles, also called agile lifecycles combine both iterative and incremental lifecycles into a single process and manage their projects. Adaptive lifecycles are preferred when there is high requirements and technical uncertainty in the project.

Adaptive/Agile Lifecycle example:
Building a productivity phone application, updating it with new features frequently through user behavior analysis

Hybrid lifecycle: Combine elements of plan-driven and change-driven lifecycles and you get a Hybrid Lifecycle Using a hybrid approach, you manage the well-defined project requirements using a predictive lifecycle, while adaptive techniques are used to manage elements of the project that has greater uncertainty.
