London moves into high COVID alert level as other cities face fresh lockdowns

Local MPs have been informed that from Saturday the capital will have tighter COVID restrictions imposed. The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan called for a higher alert level this week after citing increased coronavirus cases.

The High alert level, or tier two, means all previous restrictions apply, including the rule of six, and pubs and restaurants closing at 10pm, as well as the new restriction which means households are banned from mixing indoors. This means people cannot meet friends or family at their homes or to socialise in bars and shops. Londoners have also been told to avoid public transport where they can and to work from home.

In the week up until 9th October, London had an infection rate of 78 cases per 100,000 people. However local leaders have pointed out several boroughs have seen higher infection rates, with many seeing over 100,000 cases per 100,000 people.

London’s infection rate is far lower than many cities in the north of England. Liverpool was placed under tier three earlier this week meaning pubs and restaurants were forced to close. The government is also negotiating with local politicians in Greater Manchester and Lancashire to place those areas into the very high alert level, along with Liverpool.
