My “third time in Iceland” was all about experiencing the country’s subpolar night, and hopefully, capturing the Northern Lights. The itinerary focused on southwestern Iceland, but an unusually warm winter meant far less snow than expected. Daylight came very late, yet around midday there were still brief moments of sunshine, adding a special brilliance to the scenery.
On two nights with relatively clear skies, the aurora finally revealed itself. Despite limited opportunities and a lack of experience, I managed to record the breathtaking Northern Lights through time-lapse photography, using two full-frame cameras and ultra-wide-angle lenses.
Although the days were short, this trip helped make up for the photographic regrets of my previous visits to Iceland. I was able to capture aerial footage of the glacier lagoon, sea stacks, black sand beaches, Skógafoss waterfall, and the legendary DC-3 plane wreck.
Recently, amid a busy schedule, I found time to edit six days’ worth of footage into a cinematic short film, set to epic music—something to savor slowly in the future.
