7. The Simple Tenses Explained Visually
English uses tenses to show time.
They tell us when something happens.
The three most important tenses to start with are the simple tenses:
the present simple, the past simple, and the future simple.
Let’s look at each one.
________________________________________
First, the present simple.
We use the present simple for:
• things that are always true
• habits and routines
• things that happen regularly
For example:
I work in an office.
She drinks coffee every morning.
The sun rises in the east.
The present simple shows what is true now, and what is true in general.
________________________________________
Next, the past simple.
We use the past simple for:
• actions that started and finished in the past
For example:
I worked late yesterday.
She drank coffee this morning.
They finished the project last week.
The past simple shows that the action is complete.
The time is finished.
________________________________________
Now, the future simple.
We use the future simple to talk about:
• things that will happen later
• decisions made at the moment of speaking
• predictions
For example:
I will call you tomorrow.
She will help you.
They will arrive soon.
The future simple points forward in time.
________________________________________
Let’s compare all three.
I work from home.
This is the present simple. It is my normal situation.
I worked from home yesterday.
This is the past simple. The time is finished.
I will work from home tomorrow.
This is the future simple. It has not happened yet.
Same action.
Different times.
________________________________________
Here’s an important idea.
Simple tenses do not show how long an action lasts.
They only show when it happens.
That’s why they are called simple.
________________________________________
Let’s review.
• The present simple is for facts and habits
• The past simple is for finished actions
• The future simple is for actions that will happen later
Once you understand the simple tenses, you can talk clearly about time in English.

In the next lesson, we’ll look at a common problem for learners:
the difference between the present perfect and the past simple.
