Shadow and I travel on an astrophotography camping adventure to Kodachrome Basin, Utah, a true bortle one dark site. From there we imaged IC 1396, otherwise known as the Elephant Trunk Nebula. Kodachrome Basin was named by the National Geographic Society because of its brilliant colors and unique chimney like sandstone structures. Similar to these structures on earth is the Elephant Trunk in the constellation Cepheus, some 2,400 light years away and spanning 20 light years across.
We imaged using the Orion Maksutov-Newtonian 190mm Telescope, the Orion EQ-G Mount, and the Orion one shot full color CMOS Camera (G26). We used PHD2 for guiding and SharpCap for capturing the images. Because it was very windy, we took short 15 second sub exposures over 5 hours. Unfortunately, only about one in four were usable, and even then, not the best. But, we did capture a decent image and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the majestic beauty of Kodachrome Basin State Park.
