What It Took to Start Therapy

The mental health system shouldn’t add stress to someone already struggling — but for me, it did.
In this live, I’m walking through the entire process it took to start therapy. That includes contacting the crisis call line, walking into a crisis center during a period of emotional distress, and then making the shift from crisis services into formal mental health intake.
I’ll talk through:
• The crisis line and crisis center intake experience
• What the environment felt like when seeking immediate support
• The transition from crisis services into ongoing mental health intake
• The hoops, delays, and repeated misinformation along the way
• How long it actually took before I could sit down with a therapist
• And what the first therapy session was like once I finally got there
In my experience, most of the communication throughout the process fell short. Information wasn’t consistently verified, follow-ups often didn’t happen, and the system added stress rather than reducing it. From crisis intake through formal mental health intake, the experience felt more procedural and security-focused than supportive.
This isn’t about attacking individuals. It’s about honestly describing what the process felt like from the inside — and how difficult it can be to move from asking for help to actually receiving it.
This channel documents real life — including the struggles that aren’t always polished or comfortable. Mental health, system navigation, setbacks, progress, and everything in between.
If you’ve ever tried to access mental health care and felt discouraged by the process, this conversation may resonate.
Let’s talk about it.
