India is facing a serious LPG shortage after disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing West Asia conflict. The crisis is already impacting major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, where many restaurants are shutting down because commercial gas cylinders are not available.
Reports suggest nearly 20% of restaurants have already closed, and the hospitality sector is losing over ₹1200 crore every day. Many eateries are also removing gas-intensive items like dosa, uttapam, and tandoor dishes from their menus.
Meanwhile, the price of commercial LPG cylinders has increased, adding more pressure on businesses. The government has prioritized LPG supply for households, hospitals, and essential services while directing refineries to increase production.
Since India imports 85–90% of its LPG, mostly through the Strait of Hormuz, the ongoing disruption could deepen the energy crisis if the situation continues.
