Some wrote books.

And some — like José Sánchez del Río — lived only fourteen years, yet carried a courage that could set a nation on fire.

This song tells his story the way it deserves to be told:
as a Western-style martyr’s ballad,
a tale of a boy who refused to betray Christ,
who walked through dust and blood with unshakable resolve,
and whose final words became a battle cry echoing through generations:

“¡Viva Cristo Rey!”

During the Cristero War, when the Mexican government outlawed the Church and tried to silence the faith, José stepped forward and said:

“I am His, whatever comes my way.”

He gave up his horse so another could escape.
He endured imprisonment in a desecrated church.
He suffered torture that would break most grown men.
He encouraged others to stay faithful even while he was being led to death.

At the cemetery gate, they told him to deny Christ…
but instead, he lifted his eyes toward Heaven and shouted:

“¡Viva Cristo Rey!”

This track is dedicated to my son,
who chose this heroic young martyr as his patron saint.
May he grow in the same courage, conviction, and love for Christ the King.
