Once upon a time, when the world was still young, people lived and slept as they pleased—because there was no day or night to mark the passage of time.
In a peaceful village stood the compound of Abali, a wealthy widow who owned land, livestock and servants, yet lacked the one treasure she longed for: a child.
On the advice of her trusted servant, Abali sought the help of a powerful dibia (native doctor) who could see beyond the physical world.
After sacrifices and incantations the seer warned her:
“Travel to the land of Ekwensu, the trickster god. Wait until you hear soft bells—never enter when you hear drums.”
Abali obeyed, crossed rivers and forests, and finally heard the gentle bells.
Inside Ekwensu’s shimmering realm she was shown a single boy—handsome, but filled with cunning and blood-lust.
Desire overruled caution; she named him Obieze and carried him home.
Obieze grew quickly, first beheading chickens, then goats, then cattle.
When the servants and villagers fell, Abali herself became his final victim.
Only Amosu, an old witch on the outskirts, dared to stand against him.
In their titanic clash Amosu hurled a charm that swallowed the light; Obieze countered with one that restored it.
Back and forth the darkness and brightness wrestled—until the world was forever divided into Day and Night.
