Friends Meeting - Regenerating London’s Buses 2000-2015

Описание: In 2000, London's public transport returned to local control with both Mayor and the national government having a major commitment to public transport and appointing a new management team to regenerate public transport in the new Transport for London organisation. It is a political story, with two very different and contrasting London Mayors, the first of whom was particularly radical and determined to bring great change. It includes the terrorist events of 2005 and the 2012 Olympics, the departure of the original Routemaster, the arrival and departure of the Bendybus, and the arrival of the New Routemaster.

In this presentation, which follows his recently published book with the same title, Roger Torode describes this build up in London's buses to a level not seen since the 1950s, with congestion charging, new routes and passenger levels to match, together with widespread recognition of the high-quality service it provided. He discusses the mayoralties of Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson, with Peter Hendy initially as MD Surface Transport and then Commissioner. It follows on from the story of his 'Privatising London's Buses’ book and talk of 2015.
