The process in which the union of male and female gametes and fusion of pronuclei of sperm and egg takes place, thus diploid zygote is formed is called fertilization
Fertilization has the following process:
Syngamy – Union of male and female gamete
Plasmogamy- Intermixing of their cytoplasm
Karyogamy- Fusion of sperm and egg pronuclei
Amphimixis- Intermingling of their chromosomes

Fertilization is internal , takes place in ampulla. Fertilization occurs only if the ovum and sperms are transported simultaneously to the ampullary isthmic junction of the fallopian tube. Fertilized egg/ zygote develops into embryo, and this occurs within uterus

Process of fertilization includes:
Insemination
Capacitation
Movement of Sperm towards Egg
Entry of Sperm into the egg
Acrosomal Reaction Activation of Egg
Cortical Reaction
Fusion of Egg and Sperm

Insemination : During coitus semen is released into the vagina. Deposition of semen in vagina is called Insemination.

Capacitation: The sperms deposited in the female reproductive tract undergo capacitation, which is a biochemical event that enables the sperm to penetrate and fertilize the egg. The receptors on acrosome are exposed, sperm become active.

Movement of Sperm towards Egg: The motile sperms swim rapidly, pass through the cervix, enter into the uterus and finally reach the ampullary region of the fallopian tube.

Acrosomal Reaction: The acrosome releases lysins: hyaluronidase & corona penetrating enzymes. Hyaluronidase cleaves the hyaluronic acid between granulosa cells. They separate and dissolve the cells of corona radiata, so the sperm head passes through the zona pellucida of egg.

Activation of the Egg: As the sperm head touches the zona pellucida in the animal pole region. Its acrosome covering ruptures and release acrosin/ zona lysin enzyme. They act on zona pellucida at the point of contact. This causes egg reaction.
