In July 2025, the long disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia erupted into open fighting as clashes around ancient Khmer temples escalated into artillery strikes, drone attacks and mass displacement. What looked like a sudden crisis had actually been building for years. Both sides had militarised the frontier while nationalist rhetoric intensified. And to make things worse, the once-close ties between the Hun and Shinawatra political dynasties had broken down at exactly the wrong moment. Even repeated mediation efforts by the US and China and successive ceasefires failed to produce a real settlement, leaving the border tense and the peace fragile.

In this video, we'll trace how a dispute rooted in the fall of the Khmer Empire, French colonial map-making and the 1962 International Court of Justice ruling on Preah Vihear turned into one of Southeast Asia’s most dangerous flashpoints.
